When I was of college age, the Steve Miller Band was a vital rite of passage, like a Grateful Dead that was less harsh on the lungs (all Miller seemed to require — even for the kite-high “Fly Like an Eagle” — was a best girl, some thoughtful rays, and a fat cooler of liquid summer).
